The Mercantile Minute
In our society, sometimes a word or phrase is repeated so much that it starts to lose its real meaning. Some of these words and phrases losing their meaning is fine and doesn't affect the lives of others or the feel of a community. "Shop Local" though is an important phrase, and we at Davis Mercantile want to make sure that is never loses its meaning.
When you shop local, it is important to remember the good that you are doing. It isn't about the item that you bought, it is about who you bought it from. We understand that some things are going to be purchsed from a big box store, but the differene between a local product and one tha you find on the shelf of a big box retailer are vast. The quality difference you are getting is not only worth the price, it is vitally important for our local economy! The customer service after the sale is also important to keep in mind. If you shop locally, you have someone in your community that cares and that will be there should you have questions or run into any issues. Looking at it from our perspective, it is the difference between buying a blanket, and buying a quilt. Will a blanket keep you warm? Sure. Will it have a story behind it? No. Will it be crafted? No...it will be mass produced. I have yet to run into anyone who paid a few extra dollars for a higher quality product look back on their purchase a year later and regreat those few extra dollars that they spent. I have however met many people who tried to save a few bucks, and looked back on that decision later with MUCH regret.
So shop local. You never know who might be reading this right now who might be looking fora a good or service that you offer, and I am certain you would much rather them hire you than search the country to save a buck or two!
Quilting is more than just a hobby; it's a way of life! The visual of a quilt makes for some AMAZING quotes too! Check these 5 that were our favorites! Do you have any favorite quilting quotes?
5. Quilters aren't greedy, they are just materialistic!
4. My soul is fed with needle and thread, my body with chocolate!
3. A bed without a quilt is like a sky without stars!
2. Blankets wrap you in warmth, quilts wrap you in love!
1. A day patched with quilting seldom unravels!
As the Shipshewana Quilt Festival is upon us this week, I wanted to take a moment and make sure that we are all looking at the quilts we will see as the works of beauty and art that they are! Many that are made that look simple, are incredibly intricate, and each quilter sews a piece of themselves in every work they do.
So next time you see a quilt, don't just think about covering up with it..think about the love, time and expertise that went into making it! If a picture is worth 1000 words, a quilt is worth 1,000,000!
Our good neighbors at Hubbard's Feed Mill will be under construction from Main Street to State Road 5 for the rest of the summer.
Being that the Davis Mercantile is located on Main St, we'd like to provide you with additional directions to reach our building.
If you're coming from State Road 5, which T's off of State Road 120, turn left on Depot St. (Just before Hubbard Feed Mill.) If you're coming from US 20, continue North on State Road 5 until you reach the 4 way stop. Go through the blinking light and turn right at the blue Davis Mercantile parking sign.
We hope this clears up any confusion. We will keep everyone up to date as construction continues and eventually finishes up! We appreciate all of our customers and apologize for any confusion this has created. We promise though, the few extra turns is still well worth it!!!
